Lieutenant Alan “Babe” McLeod was Canada’s youngest winner of the highest award for gallantry in the British Empire when he received the Victoria Cross on 27 March 1918 at the age of 18. McLeod survived a vicious attack by German Fokker triplanes, and the plane, engulfed in flames, careened toward the ground. McLeod, wounded five times, managed to pilot his Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8 plane from the wing. He dragged Lieutenant A.W. Hammond from the wreckage of the plane before the artillery and bombs it had been carrying exploded.
